In Summary

According to the board, the appointment follows a structured selection process designed to identify a candidate with extensive experience in infrastructure development and large-scale project delivery across multiple international markets.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has appointed Moses Wekesa as its new Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, following what the board described as a rigorous and competitive recruitment process aimed at identifying a leader to steer the agency’s long-term aviation transformation agenda.

The announcement was made in a press statement issued in Nairobi on April 14, 2026, confirming that Wekesa will take over leadership of the state agency responsible for managing Kenya’s airports and airstrips.

“The Board of Directors of the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has appointed Mr. Moses Wekesa as the new Managing Director/CEO,” the statement reads.

According to the board, the appointment follows a structured selection process designed to identify a candidate with extensive experience in infrastructure development and large-scale project delivery across multiple international markets.

“This decision follows a rigorous, competitive interview process that identified Mr. Wekesa as the ideal leader to drive KAA’s ambitious agenda,” the statement added.

Wekesa brings experience in business development and infrastructure investment across Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. Prior to his appointment, he served as

Business Development Director at KenGen, where he was credited with spearheading corporate growth initiatives in the energy sector.

The board said his expertise in infrastructure and project finance positions him to advance Kenya’s aviation development priorities, particularly ongoing modernization programmes at key facilities, including Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

“He has managed high-impact projects across diverse economic sectors in Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa,” the statement said, adding that his experience “extends to the wider infrastructure sector, equipping him to advance Kenya’s aviation infrastructure.”

Wekesa holds multiple academic qualifications in engineering and project management. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering (Applied Mechanics) from the University of Nairobi, and postgraduate qualifications in Finance, Appraisal, and Project Planning from the University of Bradford.

The board expressed appreciation to outgoing Acting Managing Director Dr. Mohamud Gedi for what it termed his “dedicated service” during the transition period. It also acknowledged the smooth leadership handover as KAA accelerates key modernization initiatives.

“The Board extends its best wishes to Mr. Wekesa in this new assignment and expresses its appreciation to KAA General Manager Finance, Dr. Mohamud Gedi for his dedicated service as Acting Managing Director,” the statement noted.

It further highlighted that the transition comes at a critical time as the authority advances major infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening Kenya’s position as a regional aviation and logistics hub. Central to these plans is the expansion and modernization of JKIA, a flagship airport in East Africa.

“KAA continues to implement transformative initiatives, including the modernization and expansion of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), aimed at strengthening Kenya’s position as a regional aviation and logistics hub,” the board stated.

The appointment signals continuity in the authority’s strategic direction, with a strong emphasis on infrastructure expansion, operational efficiency, and regional competitiveness in the aviation sector.

KAA, a state corporation mandated to develop, manage, and operate airports and airstrips across Kenya, said it remains committed to advancing aviation excellence and supporting national economic growth.

As Wekesa prepares to assume office, industry stakeholders are expected to watch closely how he steers ongoing projects, particularly those at JKIA, which remain central to Kenya’s aviation modernization agenda.
